NO SLEEP RECORDS TO RELEASE TANCRED’S ‘CAPES’ ON VINYL FOR THE FIRST TIME
April 15, 2014 – Los Angeles, CA – No Sleep Records has announced the label will be releasing Tancred’s debut LP Capes on vinyl for the first time ever on May 20th. Fans are invited to pre-order the record today at https://store.nosleeprecords.com/product/7195.
Tancred is the side project of Jess Abbott who is best known as a guitarist and vocalist in the indie-rock darling trio Now, Now. Based in Minneapolis, Abbott began writing and recording under the moniker Tancred in between Now, Now tours and releases in early 2011 with her first full-length record Capes, which was released via No Sleep Records soon after.
Abbott’s emotionally driving vocals and guitar has long helped define the sound of her beloved main group Now, Now, but it was with Capes that she really showcased her personal songwriting style and ability to write catchy heartfelt music.
“Capes is a collection of ten musical vignettes,” Abbott explained in 2011. “It has a run time of just under twenty minutes. None of the songs really have an identifiable format. However they do have recognizable beginnings, climaxes and ends, and string together in production and lyrical themes. My past solo music was pretty intricate in the guitar department, however Capes only contains flickers of that style. The lyrical themes and imagery are what binds the vignettes for me. Capes is a record that, in quick breaths, consists of vocals, guitars, keyboards, various percussion instruments and occasionally an unlearned accordion. Guitar is often the backbone of the songs, but they are also often a full band kind of thing, in a really gentle way. If that makes sense. If any of this makes sense.”
Tancred went on to release an EP called String & Twine in late 2011, which was followed by her self-titled full-length album released by Topshelf Records in 2013.
