Shawn Carter, also known as Jay-Z, grew up in Brooklyn, New York. Having an inspiration from his mom and dad’s record collection, which was soul music. He then started making beats on the kitchen table. Later on, his mother bought him a boom box. He then started free styling and writing lyrics. In the late 1980s, Jay-Z did recordings with Jaz-O. In the early 1990s, he had multiple with LL Cool J and also featured on Big Daddy Kanes album “Daddy’s home” in 1994. His first single he made was called “In My Lifetime”. In 1995-1997 Jay-Z came out with the two albums “Reasonable Doubt” and “In My Lifetime Volume 1”. At first, no record label offered Jay-Z a deal, so he decided to sell CDs out of the trunk of his car. Then, with Damon Dash and Kareem Biggs, he created Roc-A-Fella Records as their own label in 1995. Then getting a deal with priority, he released their debut album “Reasonable Doubt” featuring Notorious B.I.G. It reached 23 on the U.S. Billboard 200 charts. The album also featured on the Rolling Stones 500 greatest hits of all time, ranking in at number 248. “Reasonable Doubts” also hit platinum. In 1997 Jay-Z signed a deal with Def Jam. Then he had released “In My Lifetime, Volume 1” which was produced bt Puff Daddy. It sold better than their debut album. Jay-Z stated that the album was made through one of the worst periods of his life, which a close friend, Notorious B.I.G.’s death. In 1998 he released “Volume 2: Hard Knock Life”. The album featured one of the biggest hits of his life time “Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem)”. In 1999 Jay-Z did a debut with Mariah Carey on “Heartbreaker” and released “Volume 3: Life and Times of S. Carter”. In 2000 Jay-Z released “The Dynasty: Roc La Familia”, which featured Kanye West, The Neptunes, and Just Blaze. This was the first album where Jay-Z started using his soul influences. In 2001 he released his 6th album “The Blueprint”. The album hit number 1 on the Billboard 200. The album went two times platinum and featured only one other artist, Eminem. In 2002, Jay-Z released “The Blueprint 2: The Gift and The Curse”. The album also hit the U.S. Billboard 200 at number 1, passing the “The Blueprint” in album sales. In 2003 after getting back from a trip in France, he was working on his next album “The Black Album”, which he collaborated with R.Kelly.st, 2008. After that, he would join Live Nation and started his Roc Nation imprint which included record label, talent/management agency and music publishing co. Jay-Z also joined up with Stargate to create another record label called Star Nation. In of September 2009 he released his 11th studio album “The Blueprint 3”. The album hit number 1 on the U.S. Billboard 200 and passed Elvis Presley and is now the solo artist record holder. In 20010, Jay-Z was creating a full length album with Kanye West after stating it was only a five track demo. The album had hit like “H.A.M.”. The album hit number 1 of the ITunes store. On July 4th, 2013 he released “Magna Carta, Holy Grail” which he received 9 Grammy nominations for the annual Grammy Awards of 2014. So yes, it is arguable that Jay-Z is a legend of the Rap game.
At the end of 2003, Jay-Z released the tour and album “Unfinished Business”, the second collaboration album with R. Kelly.

In 2004, Jay-Z collaborated with the rock band Linkin Park and the released “Remix EP Collision Course”. The only hit of the album “Numb/Encore” won a Grammy for best Rap/song collaboration. At the end of 2004, Jay-Z was named President of Def Jam Records, which led to running both companies. In 2005 Jay-z headlined in New York’s Power 105.1 annual concert. The name “I Declare War” had a meaning to it. Jay-Z was going to “Declare War” on artists that called him out at their performances. He put a lot of arguments to rest after his concer.t In 2006 Jay-Z released “Kingdom Come”. The album sold 680,000 copies in the first week, which were his highest 1st week sales ever. In 2007, Jay-Z released “American Gangster”. The album was made from inspiration for the mover “American Gangster” with the single “Blue Magic”. In 2009, Jay-Z announced he would be parting ways with Def Jam after vacating presidency January 1st, 2008.
